To achieve family supporting careers and to be prepared to thrive in a rapidly changing economy and democracy, New Jerseyans must have the ability to think critically, to solve problems, to work in teams, to communicate effectively, to be engaged in their communities and society, to be entrepreneurial, and must have a broad knowledge of the world around them.
Community Colleges are preparing all learners to be successful in their lives and careers by broadening their perspectives so that they can adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing world and innovation economy, and by equipping them to fulfil their civic duties as responsible members of a diverse democracy.

The Humanities disciplines in Community Colleges play a critical role in providing people with valuable and relevant skills, knowledge, and abilities needed to think creatively, to solve problems, and to be successful in work and in life.
NJ’s 18 Community Colleges are dedicated to enhancing these essential skills for our students. In fact, more than 8,400 students graduate from Community Colleges each year with associate degrees in Liberal Arts and Sciences/Liberal Studies, English Language and Literature, and Social Sciences and all students pursuing associates degrees take classes in the humanities as part of the general education framework.

Partnering with the New Jersey Council for the Humanities
Partnering with the New Jersey Council for the Humanities
To support this work, the New Jersey Council of County Colleges (Council) partnered with the New Jersey Council for the Humanities on a statewide Essential Skills convening in March 2020 to start a statewide discussion of essential skills and the role of the Humanities in Community Colleges.
In March 2023, the Council partnered with NJCH to co-host the “Bringing Community Back to Community Colleges” at Bergen Community College, bringing together more than 100 humanities faculty and professionals from NJ’s Community Colleges across the state.
The Council will continue to host statewide meetings and convenings to support the humanities in Community Colleges and to support the learning of essential skills.
