NJCCC Statement on the Election of Mikie Sherrill as New Jersey’s Next Governor

NJCCC congratulates Governor-Elect Mikie Sherrill and Lt. Governor-Elect Dale Caldwell on their election victory. We know Sherrill and Cladwell understand the vital role our 18 community colleges play in providing life-changing education and workforce training to over 250,000 New Jerseyans of all backgrounds and ages across the state every year.

In her election night speech, Governor-Elect Sherrill offered a vision for a state government that solves problems and ensures “everyone has a shot.” We stand ready to work with the Sherrill-Caldwell Administration to make this vision a reality for New Jersey.

Community colleges help individuals attain the postsecondary education they need for good jobs and careers, while also providing employers with the skilled workforce they need in a global, innovation economy. An added bonus: community college graduates often remain in their local regions after graduation, contributing to the community, the tax base, and the economy.

In our Opportunity Agenda: A Collective Roadmap for Action and a Future Ready New Jersey, we urge New Jersey to pursue a bold new educational attainment goal – for 75% of adults in the labor market to have degrees and credentials of value by 2040. Knowing this will be an all-hands-on-deck effort, NJCCC has already received commitments from 26 prominent business, labor, community-based and social justice organizations to join a Future Ready New Jersey Coalition that will support economic mobility and broad-based prosperity.

We look forward to working with Governor Sherrill and her Administration to build a more equitable and economically flourishing New Jersey.
